Description: Note: The alerts are updated when there is active scanner information and members of our alerts team are available to enter alerts. Sometimes we have no coverage to add updates to the alerts. Or, as with the fires, there is very little non-logistical scanner chatter since operations have become fairly scheduled and routine.

9 a.m. update http://www.kbhr933.com/bigbearnews.php Good News: Slide Fire 15% Contained, Grass Valley Fire 70% Contained -- We have good news to report from Incident Command on the Grass Valley and Slide Fire, both of which started Monday morning. The Grass Valley Fire, which has burned northwest of the Lake Arrowhead area, is now at 70% containment, as of Thursday night. Reports from the U.S. Forest Service tell us that 780 firefighters continue to make good progress on line construction in the Miller Canyon drainage, as well as mop up in the northern and eastern flanks of the fire. Damage assessment teams were able to enter the area, reporting no additional structures, beyond the earlier assessment of 100 plus structures, have burned. Details are said to be released soon. Large scale evacuations and road closures remain in effect surrounding the entire perimeter of the burn area. Firefighting crews, under the direction of Type I and Type II national incident management teams have managed to keep the burn area on the Grass Valley Fire to 1,100 acres. On the Slide Fire, centered in the Green Valley Lake and Running Springs area, is now at 15% containment, up from yesterday morning's zero percent. At present, official reports indicate that 11,675 acres have burned, and the fire is burning in southwest direction. Over 1,300 personnel are assigned specifically to the Slide Fire and crews report a moderate fire intensity surface fire, backing, occasional torching and short-range spotting. Additional structures were reported lost, with structure protection continuing along Highway 18 and Green Valley. Damage assessment teams are starting to work in the area to provided details on structures destroyed. Incident Command reports that specifics on structures destroyed will be verified and details released soon, though the present count remains at 200 plus at this time. Fire perimeter containment efforts on the Slide Fire are slow due to rough terrain, heavy vegetation and high density residential properties intermixed with bug-killed timber. Mandatory evacuations remain in place for all communities from west of Big Bear Lake to east of Crestline. Incident Command stresses that Big Bear is not an evacuation area, and that evacuation and road specifics are “seriously re-evaluated by fire managers on a daily basis.” Big Bear Lake will remain closed to boating activity today, per a directive from the Municipal Water District. Today's closure of the lake will allow for safe water pulls for aircraft using lake water for fire suppression. Scott Heule, General Manager of the MWD says, “We totally appreciate the cooperation we've received from boaters.” Due to the smoke and resulting poor air quality, the Bear Valley Unified School District has canceled school for today, and this closure will apply to all extra-curricular activities, including this evening's Big Bear High School performance at the PAC. Rainbow Kids Club will be open today, despite the school closure, though parents of Rainbow Kids are reminded that only the Big Bear Elementary School site will be open. The highways at the east end of the Valley remain open to all traffic, and the California Highway Patrol confirms that there are no checkpoints to enter Big Bear from Highway 38 or Highway 18 from Lucerne Valley.

{Terminology: Containment/Control A fire is contained when it is surrounded on all sides by some kind of boundary but is still burning and has the potential to jump a boundary line. The boundary may be a “fire line” which is a strip of area where the vegetation has been removed to deny the fire fuel, or a river, a freeway or some other barrier which is expected to stop the fire. Hose lines from fire engines may also contribute to a fire being surrounded and contained. A fire is controlled when there is no further threat of it jumping a containment line. While crews continue to do mop-up work within the fire lines, the fire fight is over.}

Thu, 25 Oct 2007 1:09 pm - Eyewitness this morning and she said All View was fine. The area that I spoke of last night where the is a burn is at the lower east/west turn but no homes are gone. The thing is that the trees and vegetation are burned right up to your porches and it looks like some hard work was put in saving the area. She expected it all to be worse than it is. Of course Smiley park looks awful and the area on Wilderness and Wagon Wheel. But even with all the burning at wagon Wheel most or all of the homes are there. The looting is a problem this time. CHP everywhere and arresting people often what she says. Just amazing. The electric is out and she was told stay put where you are for two weeks. Power poles are gone, gas lines have to be taken care of and they don't want people up there yet. Here is a list of specific addresses I gave her last night that she said were OK.

10:30a.m. update http://www.kbhr933.com/bigbearnews.php Officials Now Report 12,466 Burned Acres on Slide and Grass Valley Fires -- Update as of 10:30am Updated information from Incident Command this morning is that 12,466 acres have now burned in the San Bernardino mountains between the Slide and Grass Valley Fires, though these two blazes, both of which started Monday morning, have not merged. As the fire suppression on both fires is under the direction of both a Type I and Type II national incident management team, resources are being shared between the two fires. Of those resources, there are 10 helicopters and four airtankers on scene. With these aircraft in place, infrared flight data has been able to provide updated information on burned acreage. As of this morning, 1,100 acres have burned on the Grass Valley Fire, which the U.S. Forest Service indicates to be northwest of Lake Arrowhead and in the Twin Peaks area. Damage assessment teams were able to enter the area yesterday, reporting no additional structures had burned on Wednesday. There are presently 28 hand crews, 52 engines, six water tenders and a dozer at work on fire suppression and mop up on the Grass Valley Fire, which is at 40% containment. The Slide Fire burned more aggressively on Wednesday, due to continued dry weather with extremely dry fuels, and spotty fire behavior with flames of 3 to 6 feet in height. There is no containment figure yet for the Slide Fire which, per our eyewitness reports, has burned on the north side of Green Valley Lake, and also wrapped around to the community's south side. For the most part, the center portion of the Green Valley Lake area is OK, except for a burned hardware store and a real estate office in the downtown portion. Otherwise, the town itself remains intact, as of our visit to the area Wednesday night. Crews on the Slide Fire include 99 engines, 11 hand crews, 29 water tenders and two dozers. The updated burned acreage tally for the Slide Fire is now at 11,366 acres. There are a total of over 1,500 fire personnel battling these two blazes, and mandatory evacuations remain in place for all communities east of and including Crestline to the Snow Valley Ski Area. Voluntary evacuations are in place for those in Cedar Pines Park, Valley of Enchantment and portions of Highland. Fire officials reiterate that there is no immediate threat to the Big Bear Valley, still, as of this morning. There will be ash and smoke in our area, as the Santa Ana winds have diminished and the inversion layer is trapping the smoke down into the basin of the Big Bear Valley. Bear Valley Unified Schools remain closed today, due to the air quality. Students who attend Rainbow Kids Club are welcome at the Big Bear Elementary School site, which will be the only Rainbow Kids Club open today.

CHP have setup roadblocks throughout Crestline. They are cracking down on people moving about within the mandatory evacuation areas. There are apparently roadblocks at the 7-11, Knapps Cutoff at Manzanita, Knapps Cutoff at Lake Drive, Old Mill Road, and Crest Forest Drive at Cedar Pines Park. There could be more that I am not aware of. Residents who live in VOE and CPP can obtain a red pass that will allow them to drive on and off the mountain by way of Hwy 138 only. Reverse 911 calls went out last night advising them of the program.

GVL update - ...spoke with the fire captain who made a run through Green Valley Lake today. He told them their homes (On Juniper) were fine, as were most homes on Juniper, with the exception of the 5 that were on the cul-de-sac. Those were sadly lost, as I think everyone already knew. There is also a home on some 'point' of the lake that was unfortunately lost. Most homes on Angeles around & up against the ski lift/park are gone, as are the 2 homes next to Fox Lumber. There are also several homes gone near the camp ground. The primary loss was near there & the ski area. If you aren't in either of those 2 areas, you are probably ok. I was told Debbie & John's large old cabin on Falling Leaf was fine, as are the cabins next to them. Also, I had heard their was suspicion that the fire could have been arson, but it was expressed that the original 'Green Fire' was started by a down power line off the Nordic Trak. I don't know if this helps at all, & it's only as accurate as what comes down the 'grapevine'.

9a.m. update on Grass Valley & Slide Fires http://www.kbhr933.com/bigbearnews.php Grass Valley Fire Now 40% Contained; BVUSD Schools Closed Due to Smoke -- Update as of 9am Reports from Incident Command at this hour assure us that the Slide and Grass Valley Fires still do not pose an immediate threat to the Big Bear Valley at this time. Both fires are being overseen by a Type I and a Type II national incident management team, allowing the greatest amount of resources to the San Bernardino mountains. Incident Command remains stationed at Rim of the World High School, though a base camp has been established at Snow Valley Ski Area, where many of the over 1,500 firefighters are camping between long shifts of fire suppression. Updated tallies on the Lake Arrowhead area Grass Valley Fire, which is now 40% contained, is that 1,100 acres have burned. As of last night, officials report that no additional structures had burned yesterday, leaving the burned home count at an estimated 100 plus. On the Slide Fire in the Running Springs and Green Valley Lake areas, containment is still at zero. An estimated 200 plus homes have burned and some additional structures were burned on Wednesday, though an updated number on total loss has not yet been available. The Slide Fire has burned 10,800 acres. Official sources confirm for us this morning that the two fires have not merged. John Miller with the U.S. Forest Service tells us, “We don't see a chance of that.” The Slide Fire, however, has come toward the far west end of the Butler #2 Fire which, is a potential benefit in that that vegetation has already burned, which would slow any progress of the Slide Fire toward the Fawnskin area. This morning, Miller noted, “Flames may be visible from the Big Bear Dam, but we still do no consider the Slide Fire a threat to Big Bear.” Due to poor air quality resulting from smoke on the two fires, all schools within the Bear Valley Unified School District have been canceled for today. The Rainbow Kids Club daycare center is open, however only the site at Big Bear Elementary is open today. All Rainbow Kids Club students are welcome at the Big Bear Elementary site. All San Bernardino Valley College classes at Big Bear High School have been canceled for this evening. Highway 18 through Lucerne Valley, and Highway 38 do remain open. All official agencies tell us that these roads are open to all traffic, and Officer Gary Fernandez with the California Highway Patrol says that there is no checkpoint to come up the mountain.

Update from LAE 10/24:

6PM: Quite the day...
What started as a ‘short’ tour to
visit homes of friends and clients with
pets turned into quite a trip. I drove
past every home I knew of up here and
each was fine with one exception which,
I am sorry to say, was a complete loss
and was probably one of the very first
to be taken.

I believe the mountain to be in great
shape and in great hands. As I started
out this morning I was cornered by a
Sheriff’s vehicle as I started to drive
out of the LAE parking lot where I was
keeping it. Fortunately I had called
Sheriff Dispatch to warn of my
excursion before starting out.

I drove some of North Bay, all of
Matterhorn, most of Grass Valley, 189
from the Shell Station up through Twin
Peaks and past the Sheriff Station for
a couple blocks. I drove up Pioneer
and portions of Grizzly and I went up
to the end of Pyramid. I also drove
189 from the Shell Station down to
Daley Canyon and down to Blue Jay, from
there I went to the Village by way of
Cottage Grove and Rainbow. I continued
around to Kuffle Canyon and drove up
and into the Villas. Finally back down
Kuffle and across Shennendoah (sp?) and
back out to 189, past the mini-
Jensen’s, across the dam, and back to
LAE. Everything was in pristine
condition. No homes in these areas
were damaged in any way by fire and
there was no evidence of looting at any
point.

I also traveled along most of
Brentwood, Sonoma, and some of the
smaller streets there. Many of these
homes were lost but fortunately not all.

Most homes outside of the burn areas
had power and residents reported having
power with minimal outages over the
past few days. The areas bordering the
golf course on both sides have not had
power for several days.

Looters?
I just wanted to say that during my
excursions today I saw no evidence of
looters. The streets are tightly
controlled and 9 vehicles out of 10 are
official. Most of the rest were
passenger cars or pickups and were
visibly empty of “loot”.

I tended to drive slow along all the
roads keeping an eye on each house as
best I could - none of them had open
doors, broken windows, or looked
anything other than how they were left
by their owners.

Also:
I drove from the Shell Station at 5-
Points up past the County facility in
Twin Peaks and farther toward Crestline
by about two blocks. At 2PM, looking
as hard as I could toward the fire area
through homes and trees and up streets,
I could see no damage to any home or
business. That whole area was fine and
I do not believe it has changed since I
drove through.

As I drove Grass Valley from Peninsula
to Five Points, I saw no damage to any
home from these fires on that side of
the golf course and I do not believe
that has changed since 2PM. There is
no power along that side and up and
over the ridge above it toward Lake
Arrowhead so people will have stinky
refrigerators but more importantly,
there is no fire damage.

Wed 10/24 Source: other  From: via email from SCM - THANK YOU
I had the fortunate experience to see my home standing intact today after
being told last night, by a very credible source, that there was a strong
possibility that it had burned to the ground. I feel so humbled to have had
the opportunity to see first hand that our life was not in the shambles that
we had thought it was last night, and I believe that I owe it to the
community to share with you as much as I can, in the hope that I can bring
some peace of mind to as many families as I can.

I'm not sure what I was expecting when I first turned onto Live Oak off the
330 earlier today, but it certainly wasn't what I was seeing. Of course
there were a few structures below my line of sight both on the east and west
downslopes of Live Oak that were emitting smoke, and were probably having
some problems, but as I progressed north I couldn't help but to be amazed
that almost every house I could see while driving up Live Oak was intact,
thanks in no small part by the many hard-working firefighters I came across.
I didn't notice a single house damaged by fire despite my worst fears,
especially after hearing the scanners and reading the many comments on
various web sites reporting on the fires in RS.

When I turned east onto Valley Oak, my hopes were raised when I couldn't see
any burned brush nor smoke in the area. Sure enough, I didn't see any signs
of fire enchroachment on any house on Valley Oak. I quickly surveyed the
surrounding area, and from what I saw, it appeared as though both Summit Dr.
and many parts of Allview appeared to have excaped the fire's wrath. I then
returned to Live Oak and proceeded North, and turned left onto Willow drive.
I saw a motorcycle that was standing upright in front of a severly damaged
house. I couldn't see any other structures on Willow that had damage and I
didn't go all the way around the loop to Poplar St. because of a tree that
was across the road.

Driving towards town on the 18, I saw a cluster of homes on the left that I
had previously seen on TV (not sure exactly what street they were on but it
could have been Valley Ridge dr) that were severely damaged. Other than
those houses, it appeared as though almost every structure visable from the
18 was intact including the Village market and The Covey building. I had
expected the Firehouse and Highway Patrol buildings to be gone based on what
I was hearing and reading on the internet, but they appeared to be intact.

I Turned off the 18 on Wagon Wheel Dr. and returned to the 18 on Deep Creek
Dr. Again, from my line of sight, I didn't notice any homes that appeared to
have been burned, but did see lots of smoldering smoke in the downslopes and
there could have been some structures in trouble down there.

Proceeding into town, it looked like everything was intact and I didn't come
across one business structure, during my entire travels, that appeared to
have experienced any fire damage. I made a loop around the 76 gas station
and passed the firehouse, taking Hunsaker Way to Hundsker Dr and then back
to the 330. again, I didn't notice any damaged structures and no smoke.

The most severly damaged area I noticed was Fredalba, which got a lot of
attention on the scanner within the past 24 hours . While I had expected
severe destruction throughout the entire area, I was surprised that the
damage I saw was limited to about half a dozen homes in a clustered area. I
also saw lots of electrical wires across the road and there were lots of
firemen in the area.

I traveled Old City Creek Dr, north of the 330, from the 330 to the 18. I
saw some power poles down and lots of smoking brush. From my viewpoint, I
didn't observe any severely damaged homes. This area was also getting
attention from a lot of fire fighters.

To summarize my observations, I saw an awful lot to be positive about and
the good far outweighed the bad. Don't get me wrong, it's no walk in the
park up there and there's plenty of destruction to go around for everybody
to worry about, and some folks have experienced a real tragedy. But I was
very optimistic that a lot of families are going to be as surprised as I
was, when they finally get to see their property. Of course my comments
above are my personal observations only and not intended to be a statement
of fact about the condition of any particular property or structure
mentioned in this post.

And finally, a word about the firefighters I came across, some who I got to
spend a few minutes with. These guys and girls are real hardliners when it
comes to protecting our properties. They are commited individuals who put in
long hours and endure extreme conditions so that we may enjoy our homes. I
can't say enough about the many firefighters I saw climbing up and down
steep slopes, just to get at a smoldering pile of brush or debris. Some I
talked to came from far away places just to help out.

We'd like to share a recent story about two unknown heroes in the small community of Green Valley Lake. Marvin Neville is a retired fire chief in GVL and has been our neighbor since we purchased a home next door nearly 20 years ago. Yesterday (Monday, 10/22/07), he told us that he and his son, Robert, had decided to stay, even though a mandatory evacuation had been called for in the area. Marvin's wife, as well as Robert's wife and young child had evacuated. There was no electricity and the sky was thick with smoke, and although four or five fire engines were on the scene and the crew were trying to extinguish the raging fire on Monday, they gave up around 10:00 p.m. as it was deemed too dangerous to remain. However, Marvin and Robert kept vigil, watching as the flames came closer and closer to their home that sits at the edge of the national forest at the top of Angeles Drive. They placed sprinklers around the area and hooked a fire hose up to the fire hydrant nearby on the road. Soon the fire was at the end of the road and they, all alone on the top of the mountain, in the middle of the night, fought the hot flames with their single hose, knocking back the flames. They kept the flames at bay from their home, and also from our garage and home located next door. They did not sleep all night and thought they had also protected the beautiful log home across the road, when they noticed that the heat had ignited something inside and that home was burning from the inside. At this time, they were also trying to protect two other homes on the road within the length of the hose, but could see that it was a lost cause. They managed to save their home, as well as ours, but, our dear neighbors all lost their homes. Our phone rang at 6:30 a.m. this morning, and we expected to hear that our home was lost, only to hear the incredible story of how Marvin and Robert struggled together and saved the two homes. We cried from relief, but also out of sadness for our neighbors and all the other people who have experienced this sad loss. Although the fire danger is still great and we do not recommend that anyone stay to fight the fires, we wanted others to know about these brave people who risked their lives in an attempt to protect their neighbors' homes. Even if we lose our home within the next few days, we remain grateful to Marvin and Bobby. From your thankful neighbors, Diana and Vance.

Upper Rowco behind CHP station: We had one report last night that homes on Overhill and all but one or two homes on Onacrest in Upper Rowco were unharmed as of 8:00pm. Earlier in the day (yesterday), there were two scanner reports stating that Cedarwood Dr. looked okay, and an even earlier report that Pinehurst looked pretty good. We know that homes burnt on Wilderness Dr., Also Valley Ridge and Circle View are mostly destroyed.

Boy Scouts of America website - Running Springs Fire - Camp Helendade: 10-24-07 10:47 am Camp Helendade: I just received a phone call from one of our unit leaders who is a CA Dept of Fire Battalion Chief. He is on site at Camp Helendade in Running Springs this morning. Per his report, the Dining Hall, Lodge Bldgs, Upper restrooms and Ranger house are intact and still standing. Preliminary observation is that three structures were destroyed. The Pool House Bldg, New Handicraft Bldg and the Sports (Old Handicraft) Bldg are burnt to the ground. The fire apparently was a ground level fire with a few areas going up into the canopy of the trees. The Old Wisumahi area was hit hard and loss of trees in that area is massive. Pictures will be forth coming as he is able to send them to me.

The following summary comes from my brother, volunteer Running Springs firefighter {} who is in Running Springs. After fighting fires for 48 hours without rest or food, first in Green Valley, then in Running Springs, he was released to get some rest. He said that for every 1 house destroyed, they were able to save 5 houses. He was able to return to his home on Cedearwood Dr where he showered and ate. He said that the homes on Cedarwood Dr as well as the nearby streets were untouched by fire (he didn't specify which streets). Unfortantly, homes along Wildnerness were destroyed, as well as along the perimeter of that area where the fire swept through. I hope this gives comfort and hope to residences. {Transcriber note: PLEASE SEND OUR THANKS TO YOUR BROTHER FROM DEEPLY APPRECIATIVE RESIDENTS!}

I was a camper at Pali Mountain for seven years in the 70's when it was called Camp O-Ongo.Being extremely concerned for the campgrounds, and after not seeing any updates for awhile now on the camps condition,I just spoke to the camps secretary in their valley office at Approx 2:30 today.According to her "We did get touched, but were very Lucky".she went on to say,"We lost three of the older cabins behind the pool area and the Amphitheatre. But considering we have 28 cabins we got lucky".Apparently Andy(possibly the new owner),went up there yesterday to check on the camp, and seeing the imminent danger, immediately found some firefighters who quickly responded and saved any further damage or destruction. I'm sure there are campers old and new who've also been waiting to hear any news so I wanted to get this to you asap. Thanks for all the great work your doing.

Wed 10/24 Source: other  From: via email - THANK YOU
Took a drive (at about 11:30 am) over
to Twin Peaks to check on specific
addresses for three friends. I know
you are not publishing street
addresses, but perhaps you can
generalize from this report.

From North Road we drove north on
Grandview to the Grandview School and
did not notice any damage. We turned
right onto Walnut Hills and followed it
all the way until it turns into
Spyglass and continued along Spyglass
until it comes out onto Fairway. Along
that whole route we only saw two burned
homes. The home at 26150 Walnut Hills
was badly damaged and the home next
door to it (on the same side of the
street but with a lower street number)
was burned to the ground.

From Spyglass and Fairway we turned
right (east?) onto Fairway. The homes
along this part of Fairway (and farther
west, between Spyglass and Grandview
elementary, which we traversed on our
way home), looked fine, but the fire
appeared to have burned the forest
right up to the backyards of the homes
along the north side of this stretch of
Fairway.

From Fairway we turned north onto
Brentwood, then north onto Sonoma,
entering the Country Club View Estates.
The houses on the corner of Brentwood
and Sonoma look ok, but forest on the
left (west) side of Sonoma has burned.
We continued north on Sonoma, crossing
Sutter. The houses on east side of
Sonoma look ok, on both the north and
south sides of this part of Sutter (at
its southern intersection with
Sonoma). We crossed Placer, and things
still looked ok. There continued to be
charred trees on the west side of
Sonoma but the houses (which are on the
east side) seem ok.

We crossed the intersection with the
northern end of Sutter. One house on
the left (west) looks gone, just north
of the northern intersection of Sutter
and Sonoma and across the street from
715 Sonoma. The houses on the right
(east) side of Sonoma look ok,
including 715, 725, and 735 Sonoma.
The next house on the left also looks
ok. In fact, everything looks ok for a
while. 755 Sonoma is ok as is the
house across from it on the left.

We crossed Amador (on the left),
staying on Sonoma, and things continued
to look ok. A couple of people
appeared to be back at home already.
The most heavily damaged area that we
saw began just north of 875 Sonoma
(which was still standing). The homes
at 899, 905, 915, 935, 945, and 955
Sonoma all burned to the ground. These
are all on the east side of the
street. The next house to the north
appeared to be ok (I didn't get its
number), but another structure to the
north (perhaps just a parking deck or
garage?) was burned. Powerlines were
down across the road, but the fire crew
that was there said it was ok to drive
across them.

We crossed Amador again, farther
north. It looked like several houses
were gone on this part of Amador, to
the east of Black Oaks Drive (Sonoma
turned into Black Oaks).

We crossed Windward, staying on Black
Oaks Drive. Some charred trees here,
but the houses seem ok

We crossed Black Oaks Court on the left
(west) side of Black Oaks Drive and did
not notice any damaged homes, although
we did not drive into the court. The
four houses at the north end of Black
Oaks drive (two on each side of the
street, 1025, 1031, 1034 and one other)
looked undamaged.

We passed quite a few fire men and law
enforcement officers, but no one
stopped us or asked what we were
doing. Grandview and Brentwood both
had "road closed" signage at their
north ends, but there didn't seem to be
anyone enforcing this.
