We'd like to share a recent story about two unknown heroes in the small community of Green Valley Lake.
Marvin Neville is a retired fire chief in GVL and has been our neighbor since we purchased a home next door nearly 20 years ago.
Yesterday (Monday, 10/22/07), he told us that he and his son, Robert, had decided to stay, even though a mandatory evacuation had been called for in the area. Marvin's wife, as well as Robert's wife and young child had evacuated. There was no electricity and the sky was thick with smoke, and although four or five fire engines were on the scene and the crew were trying to extinguish the raging fire on Monday, they gave up around 10:00 p.m. as it was deemed too dangerous to remain. However, Marvin and Robert kept vigil, watching as the flames came closer and closer to their home that sits at the edge of the national forest at the top of Angeles Drive. They placed sprinklers around the area and hooked a fire hose up to the fire hydrant nearby on the road. Soon the fire was at the end of the road and they, all alone on the top of the mountain, in the middle of the night, fought the hot flames with their single hose, knocking back the flames. They kept the flames at bay from their home, and also from our garage and home located next door. They did not sleep all night and thought they had also protected the beautiful log home across the road, when they noticed that the heat had ignited something inside and that home was burning from the inside. At this time, they were also trying to protect two other homes on the road within the length of the hose, but could see that it was a lost cause. They managed to save their home, as well as ours, but, our dear neighbors all lost their homes.
Our phone rang at 6:30 a.m. this morning, and we expected to hear that our home was lost, only to hear the incredible story of how Marvin and Robert struggled together and saved the two homes. We cried from relief, but also out of sadness for our neighbors and all the other people who have experienced this sad loss.
Although the fire danger is still great and we do not recommend that anyone stay to fight the fires, we wanted others to know about these brave people who risked their lives in an attempt to protect their neighbors' homes. Even if we lose our home within the next few days, we remain grateful to Marvin and Bobby.
From your thankful neighbors, Diana and Vance. |

Boy Scouts of America website - Running Springs Fire - Camp Helendade: 10-24-07
10:47 am Camp Helendade:
I just received a phone call from one of our unit leaders who is a CA Dept of Fire Battalion Chief. He is on site at Camp Helendade in Running Springs this morning. Per his report, the Dining Hall, Lodge Bldgs, Upper restrooms and Ranger house are intact and still standing. Preliminary observation is that three structures were destroyed. The Pool House Bldg, New Handicraft Bldg and the Sports (Old Handicraft) Bldg are burnt to the ground. The fire apparently was a ground level fire with a few areas going up into the canopy of the trees. The Old Wisumahi area was hit hard and loss of trees in that area is massive. Pictures will be forth coming as he is able to send them to me.

The following summary comes from my brother, volunteer Running Springs firefighter {} who is in Running Springs. After fighting fires for 48 hours without rest or food, first in Green Valley, then in Running Springs, he was released to get some rest. He said that for every 1 house destroyed, they were able to save 5 houses. He was able to return to his home on Cedearwood Dr where he showered and ate. He said that the homes on Cedarwood Dr as well as the nearby streets were untouched by fire (he didn't specify which streets). Unfortantly, homes along Wildnerness were destroyed, as well as along the perimeter of that area where the fire swept through. I hope this gives comfort and hope to residences. {Transcriber note: PLEASE SEND OUR THANKS TO YOUR BROTHER FROM DEEPLY APPRECIATIVE RESIDENTS!} |

I was a camper at Pali Mountain for seven years in the 70's when it was called Camp O-Ongo.Being extremely concerned for the campgrounds, and after not seeing any updates for awhile now on the camps condition,I just spoke to the camps secretary in their valley office at Approx 2:30 today.According to her "We did get touched, but were very Lucky".she went on to say,"We lost three of the older cabins behind the pool area and the Amphitheatre. But considering we have 28 cabins we got lucky".Apparently Andy(possibly the new owner),went up there yesterday to check on the camp, and seeing the imminent danger, immediately found some firefighters who quickly responded and saved any further damage or destruction.
I'm sure there are campers old and new who've also been waiting to hear any news so I wanted to get this to you asap.
Thanks for all the great work your doing.

Took a drive (at about 11:30 am) over
to Twin Peaks to check on specific
addresses for three friends. I know
you are not publishing street
addresses, but perhaps you can
generalize from this report.
From North Road we drove north on
Grandview to the Grandview School and
did not notice any damage. We turned
right onto Walnut Hills and followed it
all the way until it turns into
Spyglass and continued along Spyglass
until it comes out onto Fairway. Along
that whole route we only saw two burned
homes. The home at 26150 Walnut Hills
was badly damaged and the home next
door to it (on the same side of the
street but with a lower street number)
was burned to the ground.
From Spyglass and Fairway we turned
right (east?) onto Fairway. The homes
along this part of Fairway (and farther
west, between Spyglass and Grandview
elementary, which we traversed on our
way home), looked fine, but the fire
appeared to have burned the forest
right up to the backyards of the homes
along the north side of this stretch of
Fairway.
From Fairway we turned north onto
Brentwood, then north onto Sonoma,
entering the Country Club View Estates.
The houses on the corner of Brentwood
and Sonoma look ok, but forest on the
left (west) side of Sonoma has burned.
We continued north on Sonoma, crossing
Sutter. The houses on east side of
Sonoma look ok, on both the north and
south sides of this part of Sutter (at
its southern intersection with
Sonoma). We crossed Placer, and things
still looked ok. There continued to be
charred trees on the west side of
Sonoma but the houses (which are on the
east side) seem ok.
We crossed the intersection with the
northern end of Sutter. One house on
the left (west) looks gone, just north
of the northern intersection of Sutter
and Sonoma and across the street from
715 Sonoma. The houses on the right
(east) side of Sonoma look ok,
including 715, 725, and 735 Sonoma.
The next house on the left also looks
ok. In fact, everything looks ok for a
while. 755 Sonoma is ok as is the
house across from it on the left.
We crossed Amador (on the left),
staying on Sonoma, and things continued
to look ok. A couple of people
appeared to be back at home already.
The most heavily damaged area that we
saw began just north of 875 Sonoma
(which was still standing). The homes
at 899, 905, 915, 935, 945, and 955
Sonoma all burned to the ground. These
are all on the east side of the
street. The next house to the north
appeared to be ok (I didn't get its
number), but another structure to the
north (perhaps just a parking deck or
garage?) was burned. Powerlines were
down across the road, but the fire crew
that was there said it was ok to drive
across them.
We crossed Amador again, farther
north. It looked like several houses
were gone on this part of Amador, to
the east of Black Oaks Drive (Sonoma
turned into Black Oaks).
We crossed Windward, staying on Black
Oaks Drive. Some charred trees here,
but the houses seem ok
We crossed Black Oaks Court on the left
(west) side of Black Oaks Drive and did
not notice any damaged homes, although
we did not drive into the court. The
four houses at the north end of Black
Oaks drive (two on each side of the
street, 1025, 1031, 1034 and one other)
looked undamaged.
We passed quite a few fire men and law
enforcement officers, but no one
stopped us or asked what we were
doing. Grandview and Brentwood both
had "road closed" signage at their
north ends, but there didn't seem to be
anyone enforcing this.

Crab Flats Residences, Trails End - I received a call from a resident of the Crab Flats area, 7:00am today 10/24/07. Message left on my answering machine, transcript as follows:
"... Letting you know that your house and everything is saved. We're back in here, there's no way you can get a hold of me but I will try and get a hold of you later and talk to you about everything. Your fine now, the fire has rapped around us, but everything is burned on the ground and you should be OK."
I don't know about other homes but since this is my neighbor, I would assume that there are other Trails End homes that are safe as well, at least as of this morning.

Homes between HWY 18 and Sunset, up and down the hill to City Creek rd were in tact at 3PM. Homes along Panorama Drive as of 3PM were fine, with lots of thick smoke from above HWY 18 and burning up the hill from below HWY 330. {Note: Personal THANK YOU from RS transcriber for the info on Panorama Drive.}

Damage assessment teams have started in the Grass Valley area and are moving east. They will release damage maps as soon as they are complete. They should have some detail. Call the the California School of Dog Grooming at 1-800-949-3746, and ask for Susan to see about help in San Bernardion Mountain area.
In the face of advancing flames, and under urgent evacuation orders, people reach instinctively for their beloved pets, but in the rush to leave, often forget to take the food and other provisions necessary for their care. In order to help fill this need, Dennis Sprung, President of the American Kennel Club, has coordinated with Susan Sholar, President of the California Federation of Dog Clubs, to send an immediate donation of food, collars and leashes, and crates to help those dog owners affected by the devastating fires in southern California.
CFODC members, and anyone else needing assistance in providing for their pets' security and well-being as a result of these fires, should call the California School of Dog Grooming at 1-800-949-3746, and ask for Susan. The school, located in San Diego, is the designated site for distribution of the donated supplies, as well as a growing list of volunteers with offers to foster care, or with available kennels, dog runs, RV parking spaces, spare bedrooms, sofa beds, and the like.
The AKC and CFODC, in order to maximize their opportunity to help, ask that you cross post this message wherever possible.
Thank you.

SCGACC current comments on Slide fire:
Significant Events: Mandatory evacuations. Mountain Area Safety Taskforce (MAST) Plans are being reviewed and implemented with available resources to complete actions. Over 2000 people are at evacuation centers on the Los Angeles valley floor
Remarks: Early Estimates that between the Grass Valley and Slide Fire nearly 300 structures have been damaged and consumed by the fire. Concern that damage assessment team lack the ability to gain access, debrief and provide initial report of damages. Issues include the coordination of Team transitions, splitting the incidents, planning and delegation all in a short amount of time. Just received an eyewitness account of the view of the ridge above Dart
Canyon. Appears to be glowing spots but no big flames - fire has not moved
further west down the ridge and very little activity up there now. Lots of
helicopter and tanker drops earlier seems to have gotten a handle on that
edge. Experiencing some smoke here above the lake now that the winds have
died down. Hunkered down here with the windows closed - eerily quiet now in
Crestline.

I am here still near Lake Arrowhead Elementary. Everything is quiet and winds are much lighter than earlier. There are very high level wisps of smoke above the community (1000's of feet up, very light) but nothing alarming in any way. I see no evidence of the fires near the hospital that were reported on NBC4's screen ticker.
I still have all my utilities, power has never gone out and both cable internet and cable TV (analog channels only) are restored. Most other residents have left, there is no discernible traffic on Golden Rule. |

In a phone interview with John Miller, USFS PIO, there are mandatory evacuations of all the mountain communities west of Big Bear Dam with the exception of Cedarpines Park and Valley of Enchantment, they are voluntary. Fire is running west around the back side of Running Springs, hitting Nob Hill. He does not know if Pali Mountain still exists at this point. Rimwood Ranch is threatened; active structure protection in place.
Structures are burning at the top of Live Oak and Poplar. |

the fire is getting close here to (name) home; it's up here at the top of the ridge and we have nothing to hit it with; What about Live Oak area? There were spots on the west side of Live Oak; not sure, I haven't heard any of that activity; Sounds like Fredalba/Smiley Park area got hit hard; same with areas of Nob Hill and Willow and Poplar; it was flanking us then we have fire coming back at us; What about around my house of Sunspree Oceanview area? There was some down on Old City Creek below you, but it actually looks pretty good; What about Hunsacker and Deep Creek areas, north of the town of Running Springs? They did a good job knocking the heat out. We ran out of foam; not sure we have anybody that can apply the gel. Looks like it lit up over there {behind? by?} Arrowbear, it's going to make a run towards the Nordic Tract. |

I had contacted you earlier about my property at 26665
Amador Lane in Lake Arrowhead. One of our neighbors
who lives on Windward (just above Amador, in the Black
Oaks development) went to see if his home was there.
It was gone. He said that all of the 26000 block of
Amador is gone. Where our house stood, he said that
there was just ash and a driveway to show where a
house once was.

From ROTW Google - Got an inside scoop that engines are holding a line on Hunsucker
(industrial RS) to keep the fire from spreading east. My house is a
couple lots behind this on West Dr. near Cove Circle. My neighborhood
is okay at the moment. The neighborhood to the west of this behind the post office I believe
was hit hard (Palo Alto, Whispering Pines, Secret, Encina, Deep
Creek). Those roads are narrow, so I am sure they are doing the best
they can. |

{via email from resident in CPP - Thank you} Just got back from Crestline shopping at Goodwins (9:30 AM). They are trying to stay open with only three people, but mandatory evacuation will probably shut them down. Police are now enforcing evacuation. Saw several police cars pulling walkers and bikers over and telling them to leave now. Fire hasn’t come down into Crestline yet. I drove around Edelweiss to view fire. Fire seems to be slowly coming down the slope below Grandview St. in Twin Peaks, maybe a ¼ of the way down. It does seem to have traveled further south from last night on Grandview. As of 9 PM it hadn’t reached the Twin Peaks Police Station when I drove up with my motorcycle to take a look, but it looks as if it may have jumped passed it this morning heading to Strawberry Peak. Still looks to be burning strong north/northwest of Grandview Elementary, hopefully the school is safe. But, it’s hard to tell because of the smoke… I’m hoping they can hold the line and prevent it from dropping into Crestline, but I didn’t see any firefighters in containment mode right now. Let’s all pray for some air support. Looks like the officials are triaging the fires and they are considering us a patient with a burst artery and moving on. Let’s hope that’s not the case. Lake arrowhead should all evac because it seems that 18 is the established route out right now due to the 330 being closed. They don’t want to be trapped in. VOE and Cedarpines Park still have the 18 and 138 so we should be okay unless it jumps down into Crestline or the wind shifts and starts blowing over us. I’ll keep you updated. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire mountain community. I love this community and hope we all stand together as one. |

A little good news from ROTW Google Group: "Good News for Fairway and Grandview in Lake Arrowhead/Twin Peaks" - My son-in-law drove through up Hwy 189 through Grandview and then down
Fairway with a Fire Captain around 9AM and verified that although
there is very strong smell of smoke, there were no houses lost or of
immediate threat. Most of the trees in the hillside north of Fairway
are burned. There was no house burned on El Dorado as earlier
reported. A fire truck is stationed on El Dorado near Fairway, and
several fire trucks from other areas are at Grandview Elementary.
They are doing a great job putting out any spot fires. They tried to
reach Running Springs but were unable due to high winds blowing the
fire south/south west to hwy 18. |

ABC Ch 7 - per USFS incident commander - will try to get aircraft up over Lk Arrowhead this morning. Too windy to use aircraft over RS/Green Valey Lake fire. Have 1,000 people on the two fires - not enough but will do their best. The IC said this fire is a lot tougher to fight than the old fire due to wind pushing up slope and poor road access. 4 helicopters , 4 air tankers & DC10 on standby for air (Lk Arrowhead). concentrating on west side of Lk Arrowhead/Crestline fire today also. |

Re: Interview with John Miller, USFS - Estimates the Slide incident to be approx. 4000 acres at this time. Priority at this time is structure protection in the Smiley Park and Running Springs area. Estimated containment is 5% at this time. Fire officials pulled resources from Green Valley Lake at 10 p.m. last night, and have been unable to access area since, due to road being blocked by fire. Miller added that a strike team from Malibu has just arrived and will be deployed to the Smiley Park area. The other area on which they are concentrating efforts is the area west of Lake Arrowhead, and the Twin Peaks area. |

We are still hanging out in Crestline. We are at Lake Greg Dr and Nestal. There seem to be quite a few of us here according to your "standby" ROTW (thank you for that btw...). We have a view of the entire east side of the Lake Gregory Valley looking down on the baseball end of the lake. I don't see any movement on the part of the fire. In fact, it seems to have lessened and I don't think it's wishful thinking. Winds are actually a bit quieter than they were earlier, but still not near being calm. We are watching closely and will leave if we are in the way of firefighting efforts or if fire does come close. Until then, we are digging in. Luck and blessings to everyone both up and down. |

Just want to give you an update from our fire fighter friend who's been in the Deer Lodge Park area all day and has a home there.
No homes have burned in the Deer Lodge Park area. They are watching some hot spots behind the area, but it's blowing out west away from Deer Lodge. Power is on and some people were still staying in the area.
The fire started by power line fire on Edgecliff (according to eyewitness accounts) and homes were in danger through out the day along Edgecliff. The fire has burned homes on Brentwood Dr. which connects with Edgecliff at the Deer Lodge Park sign.
Also there was an incorrect report of two structures burned down on Klondike. As of 5 pm tonight, after the report was posted through the scanner, an eyewitness confirmed that no homes on Klondike, or Aleutian had been burned. The fire had stayed on the West side of the Golf Course and not crossed Grass Valley. The areas of Sandlewood looked gloomy with lots of fire hoses out on those streets.
Also, fire crews held off the fire at Cypress protecting several homes. Another fire fighter who lives on Squirrel reported this and also reported the fire alarmingly close to his house.
The Lake Arrowhead Resort is hosting the firefighters with Papaya Bay serving them food. The resort is closed to the public.
Power is still on in Lake Arrowhead. TV stations are not working here, but the internet is still working. Winds have calmed down a bit since about 4 pm today. Several helicopters were making runs over the Lake filled with water heading towards Grass Valley.
Lake Arrowhead Village is closed.
this update is from an eyewitness & local pastor (staying on to assist as a pastor) who lives next to the Lake Arrowhead Resort. |

I have a good view of the fire from my home in Cedar Glen. The fire is currently coming from the East and up the back side of the ridge above the care takers home at the Boy Scout Camp. It is possible that the upper part of the camp has sustained damage. The wind is blowing in such a way that it is moving West between Hwy 18 and the care takers home. Flames are now visible just behind the ridge. If the fire keeps moving like it has been, it will burn between Hwy 18 and Hook Creek. It is hard to tell at this point how far down the hill the fire will burn toward Hook Creek. It appears to be moving more West South West than North so I would expect the fire to burn well above any homes in Cedar Glen. Considering the fire's current direction of movement, the next areas of concern would appear to be be Heaps Peak and then Santa's Village as it moves toward Sky Forest and Cedar Ridge. I should be able to give a better idea tomorrow. So far, the fire is still a good distance from the homes and no homes have been damage in Cedar Glen.
